Roughton and District Womens Institute, Norfolk
Roughton and District WI was formed on the 26th January 1932 although there were a few years in which it was suspended.
We are a group of ladies who not only belong to WI for what it stands for but ladies who like to socialise, enjoy ourselves, make new friends and have fun!
The WI movement began at Stoney Creek in Canada in 1897, when Adelaide Hoodless addressed a meeting for the wives of members of the Farmers' Institute. The first British WI meeting took place on 16th September 1915 at LLanfairpwll on Anglesey, North Wales. The WI was originally set up in the UK to revitalise rural communities and to encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War. Norfolk Federation celebrated their centenary in 2019.
The WI plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities.
