Many of our members, and partners, enjoyed a guided tour of the walled garden at Holkham Hall.  It was interesting to hear of the works in progress, and the planting schemes, and would be nice to have a return visit to see lots of the plants in bloom, and vegetables growing

An interesting evening was enjoyed by the members who attended the Noreaster AGM hosted by Mundesley.  The speaker was Paul Robertson who gave an interesting talk about his career looking after Royal Clocks in palaces, and Westminster.  This was followed by a delicious buffet, and reports from the member WIs

A few Roughton members attended the FAM at the Theatre Royal In Norwich, where the guest speaker was Joanne Harris MBE, an award winning novelist. Her talk was very interesting and entertaining, and kept everyone interested.  It was good to meet other WI members and to hear the news from Federation from the past year, and upcoming plans

A team of ladies had been working away for several weeks, creating our entry for the Salver competition.  It was the first time we had entered, and we were delighted to tie in 2nd place in the Novice category.  The theme was a period in fashion, and we chose the age of Marie Antoinette.  Well done to Pam, Brenda, Jill, Hazel and Sue

An afternoon of shooting and archery, provided by Roughton Scouts, was enjoyed by members of Roughton WI, and some of their family members.  There was plenty of refreshments, of course including cakes, and a raffle.  The Scouts had been the focus of our fundraising for the past year, and the occasion was rounded off with the presentation of a cheque to them, for use to purchase equipment for the local Scouts benefit.

In a beautifully decorated village hall, with lovely china tableware to compliment the vintage theme, the ladies of Roughton WI were treated to an afternoon of plentiful delicious food and drink, while being entertained by Pam and her friends singing songs of the era.  There were also table quizzes to keep our minds busy, time to chat, and of course a raffle.  Many thanks to those who were behind the scenes organising it all and preparing the food, especially with the extreme heat of the day !  

Members enjoyed a lovely walk in the West Runton area, followed by coffee outside at the Corner House (which they scored as 10/10)

Roughton WI members, their families and friends, enjoyed a lovely June evening aboard the Southern Comfort Mississippi paddle boat, touring the Broads from Horning, to St Benets Abbey, and back.

There was plenty of wildlife to view, including herons, cormorants, geese and kingfishers.

A lovely buffet was enjoyed, and it was a pleasant evening to just relax and chat to friends, and enjoy the scenery.

A workshop was held, for members and friends, to come along and try rag rugging.  Ladies either continued with a previously started project, or some learnt the basics right from the beginning.  Everyone enjoyed the day, and there is lots of work to do at home to complete the items.

Brenda led a lovely walk in the sunshine for our April ACWW walk. We met at Natural Surroundings, Bayfield and walked to Glandford and over the river. Then uphill, where we enjoyed watching the piglets, before heading back to Bayfield through woods with beautiful bluebells. Then, of course, coffee and cake at Natural Surroundings cafe. Further donations for ACWW will be taken at our May meeting.

Roughton & District WI February walk from Briggate to Honing

Eleven members, plus dogs met at the old Honing railway station at Briggate. It was a lovely sunny spring day, and we walked along the Weaver's Way to Honing Lock, then along quiet lanes into the village. We were made welcome at the Village Hall coffee morning with delicious home-made cakes, savouries and tea and coffee. We then walked another mile back to the car park at Briggate. A coffee morning is held here every 4 weeks, to coincide with a visit from the mobile library. Call in if you are nearby. Walking groups are welcome but they appreciate advance notice. The walking group had a good walk in Norwich, by the river then up to Ketts Heights. They enjoyed a lovely view, interrupted by a sudden rain shower! They then walked back along Bishopsgate, and into Cathedral Close, finishing up at the Refectory for refreshments. Thanks to Brenda for leading the walk.

A steady stream of visitors came into the hall to look around and purchase items.  There were refreshments available, and a selection of stalls selling Christmas gifts, beauty products, knitted items, wooden gifts and of course cakes !  The money raise will be shared between our WI and Roughton Scouts (our charity for this year)

A successful workshop was held where several members made 3 different types of Christmas decorations, instructed by Hazel and Sue.

The items made were a stitched felt gingerbread person, button trees and snowmen, and a foam tree.  Anyone who didnt want to take their decorations home was able to donate them to the upcoming Christmas Fayre.

Two intrepid adventurers (and a spectator) attended the Norfolk Federation organised outing to Norfolk Snowsports Club in Norwich, to try their hand at tubing.  They joined several other ladies from across Norfolks WIs, and had a great time.  After the intitial concerns of not being sure what they were going to be doing exactly, they got braver and braver, resulting in coming down the slope in pairs, threesomes, and finally a large group, some choosing to be spun round to add to the excitement! 

They can't wait to go back and have another go (more planned by the Federation for 2025), but are hoping to be able to get an outing organised for Roughton members before then.

A handful of Roughton members took advantage of a lovely summer evening, (much nicer than last year's arctic conditions!), to try their hand at paddle boarding or 'sit-ons', courtesy of our local Scouts.  Everyone taking part had a lovely evening, and we are already planning for next time !

Liz and Gill, kindly hosted a 'posh' garden party, with their team of helpers, on a lovely sunny July afternoon.

It gave all those attending, the chance to don their best outfits, with several accessorising with their fancy hats.  It was a lovely afternoon of socialising and indulging in the many tasty treats.  There was a bottle tombola and raffle, and the proceeds will be added to this year's charity total.

Thanks to all involved with the hard work in organising it.

The sun shone for our monthly walk, and today a group of ladies, led by Brenda S, completed a circular route from Cromer, heading westward and visiting East Runton.  On their return they stopped off at Bluesky cafe on the cliff top for much needed refreshment.

A member of our WI arranged a garden games afternoon for us.

After the awful weather of the last few weeks, we couldn't have asked for a better afternoon. Sun hats and suncream became the necessary accessories

A raffle, quiz and competitive games were on offer, and everyone took their own cup and saucer to enter a competition for the prettiest, with prizes for winners. We were encouraged to mix and had to choose a different partner for each game.

Thanks to Liz C for hosting and organising the afternoon, and congratulations to Maureen for winning the games, and Sue D for winning both the quiz, and best tea cup competition.

WI members and guests had a lovely afternoon at Roughton Scouts, where 8 brave ladies abseiled down the mill. Whilst many were happy to just watch, some also had a go at tomahawk throwing.  It just goes to show that the ladies of Roughton WI are happy to have a try at most things !!

The light drizzle didnt dampen our spirits, as a group of WI members met at Hoveton Hall Gardens for a look round the grounds, coffee and lunch.  The rhododendrons were just starting to bloom, and we were lucky enough to see a family of swans and hear a cuckoo.

Several members and friends all met together at the village hall for an embroidery workshop, led by the tutor Shelagh.  Some had been to previous workshops she has led, so had some idea what to expect and so were slightly more prepared than the novices.  Everyone was given some calico, a bag of drilled shells etc., and after being shown examples of what to do, we all interpreted our deisgns in our own way.  Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves as we stitched away, and took home their work to finish at their leisure. 

This months walk was led by Brenda, and started at Alby Crafts car park.  It was a nice bright morning, although a bit chilly.

On a bright Tuesday morning, a group of 15 members of Roughton WI met in Blickling Hall car park, for a pleasant walk around the estate lake. At the halfway point, some ladies chose the slightly longer walk, while the rest made their way back towards the car park.  Everyone met up in the cafe, and enjoyed the refreshments (cake and scones of course) and a chat, before making their way back home.

Roughton WI were the hosts for this years Carol service.  The church was full, and each WI present presented a reading or poem, and selected a carol.  Visitors were greeted by a choir formed from some members of Roughton WI, and they also sung at the end of the service.  The church was decorated for Christmas, and there were trees which had been decorated by various local groups, including our WI.

The service was followed with mince pies, sausage rolls and drinks.

Due to a previous spell of wet weather, there were some memorable events occured in the parking area!!

A group of a total of 12 ladies, attended a Christmas themed craft workshop, led by our own members, Hazel and Sue.

Bottles and jars had been previously painted with a base colour, and once each person had selected a bottle, they set too, decoupaging them with a Christmas or floral napkin.  The end were results looked lovely, especially when the lights were added.

Next cards were made - 2 designs - a tree and a snowman, using pens, tape and glitter glue.

Finally we finished off making a hanging tree decoration from folded wrapping paper, beads and wire. This one proved a bit more tricky though as it was quite fiddly to fold the smaller pieces.  Most persevered though, and took home a good selection of Christmas items.

It was nice to see everyone's interpretation of the designs, and to get ideas from each other.

Requests for another next year, have already been made !

A group of 16 members and friends, had a lovely Autumnal walk at Felbrigg today.  We walked in memory of Debbie Simpson (who was a member of Roughon WI) and were joined by some friends from the Thursday walking group. A collection was taken for a cancer charity.

We ended with refreshments of course, in the Courtyard cafe !

We enjoyed a lovely evening on the Broads with a trip on the Marsh Harrier, and then a guided tour of the museum. We were very fortunate to see several kingfishers and herons, and a few other birds and waterfowl. The boat trip was rounded off with some spectacular colours in the sky.

A well attended afternoon tea, hosted by Roughton WI at the Scout Hut, was enjoyed by members of the Noreaster group of WIs.  A delicious spread of sandwiches and cakes was provided, and our brains were tested by 2 table quizzes supplied by Zoe.

As we have so many talented members in our WI, we recently used their skills to run our first 'in-house' craft day. So on a Thursday in September, several members came along to try their hand at different painting skills.

Hilary showed us how to use shaving foam and food colouring to create marbled paper, Sue used acrylic paints and rollers on an acrylic plate to make designs to print (similar to geliplate) and Hazel instructed us in glass and pebble painting using painting pens.

Everyone was pleased with their creations, and as it was a success we now look forward to a Christmas themed workshop later this year.

Some of the members of Roughton & District WI travelled to the west of the county today, for a trip to Oxburgh Hall and Gooderstone Water Gardens. Fortunately the weather was much nicer than the previous few days, and we were able to walk round in the sunshine, but without it being too hot.

First stop was Oxburgh Hall, and we met up to start with coffee (and scones) before looking round the hall, and then the grounds. We also accosted a man, quietly minding his own business sat on a bench, to take the obligatory group photo ! Following our walk in the grounds we all met back up to make the journey to Gooderstone Water Gardens for lunch, and then a look round........ well most of us did, apart from the 2 who rather than a 2 mile trip straight there, managed an 11 mile detour via RAF Marham, blaming the wrong postcode in their satnav, or were they on a search for some handsome airmen ??? !! I think it will be a long time before they are allowed to forget the fun they caused ! Fortunately they arrived in time to join us walking round the lovely gardens - very picturesque, and well worth a visit. We also met a gentleman doing some weeding, who informed us that he was the only paid gardener there, and what a never ending job it was to weed and prune - he kindly took yet another group photo for us

We then all met back up again for tea and cake, before making our journeys home.

It was a lovely day out, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.

In June, a ribbon embroidery workshop was held in our village hall, and we welcomed our tutor for the day, Betty Stacey, a Norfolk WI Creative Activities committee member.

There was a mixture of abilities, with some ladies having attended one of Betty's workshops before, whilst others had never tried the ribbon embroidery before, or even being too sure what it was.

We were all given the same pack and patterns, but could choose our own colour schemes. Betty then demonstrated the first type of flower we would be making, a rose, and then we went off to attempt it for ourselves. There was lots of help available to those needing it. When we had all completed the rose, we were then shown the other type of ribbon stitching, which we could use for daisy type petals and leaves.

By lunchtime most of us had completed the first card, and after a break made a start on the second. Those who weren't going to get it finished during the workshop, were able make sure they had enough of the materials to take home to complete it.

Everyone enjoyed the day, and all seemed pleased with their results.

On a chilly June evening (not the sun and heat we were hoping for), a group of our WIs 'Action Girls', spent a couple of hours being instructed in canoeing and paddle boarding. We are lucky to have this opportunity and appreciate the instruction from the local scout leaders, who we fund raise for.

Some of the ladies had previous experience of canoeing, whilst others were complete novices. We all had a go at it though, manoeuvring our canoes round 2 buoys, in a figure of 8, with a few early visits into the bank until we got the hang of it.

Three brave ladies then had a turn at paddle boarding, with all managing to stand up for a short time, and NO ONE fell in !!!!!

We all warmed up afterwards with a hot drink and cake, and are already planning our next activity, watch this space ....................

Our walk for May, involved 8 of our members (and their dogs), meeting at Alby Crafts, for a walk round Alby and Thwaite.  The walk ended back at Alby Crafts where we enjoyed refreshments in the cafe.

The hall was rather quiet today, while a group of 8 ladies concentrated very hard on a quilling workshop.  We were instructed by Carol, and by the end of the session we had all successfully made a card.  It was good to see how everyones interpretations, having all started with the same pattern to follow, differed.

A group of 11 ladies enjoyed a cold but very sunny walk to Overstrand from Cromer along the cliff top.  They stopped off halfway at the cliff top cafe, which is dog friendly, meaning that everyone, including the 4 legged friends, could sit inside to warm up, before the walk back, via the old railway line. Thank you to Barbara for arranging the walk.

After this event having to be cancelled earlier in the year, 2 member of our WI made it to the rearranged date.  It was a rather wet day in Norwich, but none the less we had fun and solved most of the clues, while walking off the excesses of Christmas!  We started and ended at Evelyn Suffield House, and on our return had a welcome coffee and mince pie. Thanks to Coral and Vicki who arranged the event.

A coach was booked, and all spaces were sold, so a trip to the greyhound racing at Gt Yarmouth was held.  The party enjoyed a good evening of socialising and food, and then tried to win their fortunes on the racing (not sure anyone won a substantial amount ;)  )

A pre Christmas pamper evening and craft event was held at Cromer Parish Hall.  It was a very successful evening, with lots of ladies attending, and a good selection of treatments to try out on the evening, or to think about booking in the future.  There were a good selection of crafts available to buy, and a mince pie, sausage roll and prosecco for each visitor.

A successful craft workshop was held, where we created a set of 5 cards, and a print, from 2 lino cuts.  We experimented with proper lino, and a more modern equivalent.  One was far easier to cut, but the other allowed for more accuracy.  There were some lovely prints made.

Five of our members participated in the Norwich Halloween ghost walk.  It was very enjoyable, although some were scared by 'actors' jumping out the bushes, as the walk took part !!  We walked along the river, near to Cow Tower, and were told stories of events that had happened in the past, and ghosts who might haunt the area.  We can highly recommend the event, and look forward to going on some of the others that are held.

An enjoyable walk was led by Barbara, on a circular route round Aylsham, walking on some of the old railway route.  We finished off with coffee and scones at Woodgate Nursery.

Our visit to Hampton Court was on a lovely sunny day.  We travelled by coach and the journey gave us all a good chance to have a long chat. On arrival we had a couple of hours in which to have our lunch and a wander around the beautiful gardens. Sarah Slater, our guide, met us at 2pm and gave the most informative and interesting tour.  Most of us knew her, as she had given our WI a talk on Zoom during lockdown, putting the idea of the visit into our minds. Sarah took us round all the rooms telling us some of the quirks on the design, and telling us the fascinating history. Hampton Court is an amazing place and we would recommend everyone to visit if given a chance.

A group of 13 ladies spent a few hours creating a range of Dorset buttons, tutored by Sheelagh.  It needed a lot of concentration, and it was nice to see how everyone had their own version of the finished buttons. 

A group of our WI members took part in a lovely walk in the Blickling Estate, to raise funds for Associated Country Women of the World.

The path was lined with lots of beautiful bluebells, and sheep, lambs and cattle were in the fields.  We stopped midway for refreshments, and fortunately made it back to the car park before the rain started.

Another successful Pewter workshop was held, and enjoyed by all the participants.  A selection of items were made, including photo frames, candle pot lid and notebooks, and everyone was pleased with their end results.

Over 2 separate sessions, a few of our members had great fun recently trying out archery at the local Roughton Scouts.  Initially a few people seemed to have a spot of bother locating the targets, but by the end of the evening we all faired much better, even managing to burst balloons pinned to the target.  We are fundraising for Roughton Scouts this year, and it was nice to be able to go along and use their facilities.

Representatives of our WI recently attended the Norfolk Federation 102nd AGM in Norwich. On behalf of our WI they received an 'Advisors Accolade Award for 2021, in recognition of members engagement with their WI, pulling together and overcoming obstacles'.  There was also a presentation made of a certificate, in recognition of our 90th birthday.

A very successful coffee morning, and raffle, was hosted by Hazel Patrickson and Sue Dyke, at Hazels, fundraising for our charity this year - Roughton Scouts.

Thank you to every one that attended, and we raised the magnificent sum of £115.57  !!

Members of our walking group, met recently in Mundesley, for a circular walk. It was very enjoyable, especially as the weather was so lovely.

A few members of our walking group braved the damp, misty December weather this morning, for a pleasant 2 mile walk in Holt Country Park.  We finished off with a welcome hot drink and mince pies at Hettys Tearoom.

Cromer Parish Church 11am

This was a very successful event, and on the day raised almost £1,000. Thank you everyone.

A small group of members enjoyed a pleasant, although slightly muddy walk, along the River Bure in Horstead, ending with a visit to a local cafe.  One member was lucky enough to spot a kingfisher, and there were several swans, a heron, and some ponies to be seen too.

A small group met in the village hall for a workshop, to discover how to create a picture on Calico, using fabric paints and embroidery stitches.

Our instructor, Sheelagh, talked us through the processes of painting the background, and then ideas of how we could stitch on it with the embroidery threads, to create trees, flowers etc.

Everyone's design was different, and we all took our work away to continue adding to it to complete the picture (no photos available of completed work yet)

It was an enjoyable and informative workshop, and for many of us it was the first experience of this craft, and we learnt some new stitches and skills.

Members and their partners enjoyed a day trip to the vineyard, and tasted 4 different wines. This was followed by a lunch at Earsham Hall.

A few ladies had a pleasant walk around Holt Country Park

A number of members, and friends, enjoyed a rearranged pewter workshop.  They were able to chose between a variety of photo frames, candle pots and notebooks to decorate.  The class, led by Hazel, showed us how to make the pattern, emboss and fill it, and then to polish it before finally making it in to our chosen item.  Everyone was pleased with their finished item.

A few members, and their dogs, recently took the opportunity to enjoy a walk around the Felbrigg Estate.

The next walk has been arranged for Friday 23rd July from Morston to Blakeney, and back.  Arrangements to transport anyone wanting to walk just one way to Blakeney can be made. 

Summer garden party, held in a members garden in West Runton

An enjoyable day out was had by a group of members. We split into 2 smaller groups for an interesting guided tour of historic Kings Lynn, especially the quayside area.  Following this we made our way to Heacham to Norfolk Lavender, where lunch was enjoyed, followed by a short time to look around the shop and make purchases before the journey home.

Our craft group meet monthly via Zoom to chat about crafting that they have been doing or are doing. It is also an opportunity to give advice where people are having difficulty with any element of their project. 

One of our members have organised our first Craft workshop for which we are all excited about.
